Solvay, NY — Artist Ty Marshal, 35, was born and raised in the village of Solvay and now he is running to be the next mayor.

Marshal, the Syracuse Technology Garden’s artist in residence, is collecting signatures for his petition to run as an independent candidate for mayor. He said he is seeking the seat to help create positive change in the village.

“Really what I am is an artist and a citizen and I’m exercising my right to run for office,” he said.

The deadline for independent candidates to file petitions with the Onondaga County Board of Elections is Feb. 12. It is unclear who Marshal will be running against. Solvay Mayor Kathy Marinelli said she will not be running for re-election. She has served as mayor for four years and has served on the village board for a total of 20 years.

Marshal  said he enjoys living in the village and he wants to do everything in his power to save the village.

“If we remain on the same path that we’ve always taken I can assure you the village will be dissolved,” he said. “We need to act now.”

Solvay, NY -- Solvay Republicans have tapped Ty Marshal as their nominee for mayor in the March village election.

Marshal already is circulating petitions to gain a spot on the ballot as an independent candidate. If he gathers enough signatures, Marshal's name will appear on both the Republican and independent lines, said Trustee Tom Tarolli, a Republican.

Marshal will face Democratic nominee Ron Benedetti in the mayor's race.

The approximately 30 people who attended the caucus Monday night at Geddes town hall also chose trustee candidates Joe Solon in the 1st Ward, Derek Baichi in the 2nd Ward and Garry Acchione in the 3rd Ward, Tarolli said.

The Democrats chose their slate of candidates last week. The party's trustee candidates are John Cregg in the 1st Ward, Charles Callura in the 2nd Ward and Harry DeCarlo III in the 3rd Ward.

The election takes place on March 19.
